The fashion for hand-crocheted bed spreads is a charming revival of an old art. Knowledge of a simple stitches makes it possible to create a beautiful design. A spread of 2 x 2 ½ yds. Requires 40 to 45 balls or hanks.

Materials: Clark’s O. N.T Knitting and Crochet Cotton, 30 to 36 balls or hanks, White or Ecru. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 4, 5 0r 6.

Gauge: 1 block measures about 5 inches. Finished spread 17 x 20 blocks. To begin, ch 8, join in a ring by slip stitching. 1^st row: Ch 6, 7 d c in ring with ch 3 between each dc. Ch 3 join in 3^rd st of ch-6. 2^nd row: Ch 3, 4 d c, over reach ch-3 and 1 d c in every d c; join in 3^rd st of ch-3. 3^rd-row Ch 3, 1 d c in same st from which ch 3 was started. 1 d c in each of next 3 d c (catching the hook in back loop only throughout square), * ch 2, skip 1 d c, 2 d c in next d c, 1 d c in each if next 3 d c. Repeat from * until there are 8 groups of d c. Ch 2 and join with sl st in 3^rd ch of ch 3 of previous row. 4^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st form which ch-3 was started, * 1 dc in next d c, 1 popcorn st as follows: ch 1, 5 d c in next d c, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1, pick up dropped loop and draw it through st on hook. 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c. Ch 3, skip ch 2 of preceding row, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * until 8 groups are made; then ch 3 and join in 3^rd st of ch 3 of previous row. 5^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st from which ch-3 was started, * 1 d c in each of next 5 d c, 2 d c in next d c, ch 3, ckip ch-3, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * until 8 groups are completed. Then ch 3 and join in 3^rd st of ch-3 of previous row.

6^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st from ch 3 was started, * 1 dc in next d c, 1 popcorn st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next d c, 2 d c in next d c. Ch 4, skip ch-3, 2 d c in next d c and repeat from *. Continue for the 8 groups.

7^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st from which ch-3 was started, * 1 d c in each of next 9 d c, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from *, completing the 8 groups. Ch 4 and join.

8^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st from which ch-3 was started, * 1 d c in next d c, 1 popcorn st in next d c, 1 d c in each of next 3 d c, 1 popcorn st in next d c, 1 d c in next d c, 2 d c in next d c. Ch 5, skip ch-4, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * and complete 8 groups. Ch 5, and join.

9^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in same st form which ch-3 was started. * 1 dc in each of next 13 d c, 2 d c in next d c. Ch 5, skip ch-5, 2 d c in next d c , 1 d c in each of next 11 d c, ch 4 and turn. 1 tr un 4^th d c from hook, ch 9, 1 tr in same stitch, ch 4, skip 4 d c, 1 sl st in next d c, ch 1, turn. 4 s c over ch-4, ch 1, 5 s c over ch-9, ch 4, 5 s c over same ch loop, ch 1, 4 s c over next ch-4, 1 sl st in the 2 loops, ch 1, 4 s c over next ch-4, ch 1 5 s c over ch-9, ch 4, 5 s c over same ch loop, ch 1, 4 s over next 2 d c, 2 d c in next d c. Ch 5, skip ch-5, 2 d c in next d c. Repeat from * and complete 8 groups. Entire outer edge of spread should be finished with the scalloped edge. These can be made as the outer block is crocheted.

Make as many blocks as desired and sl st blocks together on wrong side of work across the 17 d c to middle of ch-5. Join scallops with needle and thread, sewing the p’s together.

BedSpread in Block Design or Irish Crochet and Popcorn Stitch

Materials: Clark’s O.N.T Knitting and Crochet Cotton. 30 to 36 balls or hanks, White or Ecru. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 4, 5 or 6.

Gauge: 1 block measures about 5 ½ inches. Finished spread – 15 X 18 blocks.

To begin, ch 8 with sl st to form a ring. 1^st row: Ch 1, 12 s c in ring. Join with sl st in 1^st sc. 2^nd row: * ch 5, skip 1 s c, 1 s c in next s c. Repeat from * until there are 6 loops. Join the last ch 5 in the s c of the first loop.

3^rd row: Over each ch-5 work 1 s c, 1 half d c, 5 d c, 1 half d c, 1 s c.

4^th row: Ch 5, fasten with s c on back of preceding row between two petals, ch 5, fasten as before. Repeat around 6 petals. 5^th row: Over each ch-5 work 1 s c, 1 half d c, 1 d c, 5 tr, 1 d c, 1 half d s, 1 s c.

6^th row: S1 st in each of first 3 sts of 1^st petal made in this row. 1 s c in 1^st tr, * ch 9, 1 s c in 5^th tr, ch 4, 1 s c in same st forming a p, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in 1^st tr of next petal, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in 5^th tr, ch 9, 1 s c and 1 p in 1^st tr of next petal, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in 1^st tr of next petal, and repeat from * once.

7^th row: S1 st to middle of ch-9 loop, * ch 7, 1 s c in same st from which ch-7 started, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in center of next ch-7 loop of preceding row, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in center of ch-9 and repeat from * 3 times.

8^th row: Sl st to middle of 1^st ch-7 loop, ch 8, 1 d c in same st from which ch-8 started, *ch 6, 1 s c and 1 p in center of ch of preceding row, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in center of next ch-7, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in center of next ch-7, ch 6, 1 d c in center if next ch-7 loop, ch 5, 1 d c in same as st as last d c and repeat from * 3 times, ending row with sl st ( instead of dc) in 3^rd st of ch-8.

9^th row: Ch 3, * 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, ch 5, 1 d c in same st as previous d c, 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts, 1 popcorn st in as follows: ch 1, 5 d c in next dc, drop st from hook, insert hook back in ch-1 and draw dropped loop through the one on hook. 1 d c in each of the next sts, ch 6, 1 s c and p in center of ch loop of preceding row, ch 7, 1 s c and 1 p in center of next ch loop, ch 6, 1 d c in each of last 3 sts of next ch-6, 1 popcorn st in next d c, 1 dc in next st. Repeat from * 3 times, ending row with a popcorn st and sl st in 3^rd st of ch-3 first made.

10^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in next d c, 1 popcorn st, 1 d c in each of the next 3 sts, * ch 5, 1 d c in same st for corner. Work in next 12 sts as follows: 2 d c, 1 popcorn st, 5 d c, 1 popcorn st, 3 d c ( catching hook in backloop only throughout block) ch 6, 1 s c and 1 p in center of next ch loop, ch 6, 1 d c in center of next xh loop, 2 d c, 1 popcorn st, 5 d c, 1 popcorn st, 4 d c. Repeat from * 3 times, ending row by sl st in 3^rd st of ch-3 first made.

11^th row: Ch 3, * 4 d c, 1 popcorn st, 3 d c, ch 5, 1 d c in same st for corner. Work in next 18 sts – 2 d c, 1 popcorn st, 5 d c, 1 popcorn st, 5 d c, 1 popcorn st, 1 d c and repeat from * 3 times, ending row with popcorn st and sl st in 3^rd st of ch-3 first made.

12^th row: Ch 3, 1 d c in each st to corner, ch 5, 1 d c in same st for corner, then 1 d c in each st making corners as before. Join with sl st in 3^rd st of ch-3 first made. 13^th row: Ch 3, skip 2 sts, 1 s c in next st. Continue around entire block with ch 3 and s c so that there are 18 loops on each side and an additional loop at each corner.

To join, catch with s c on ch-3 nearest the edge, ch 3, catch with s c in same position on 2^nd block, c 3, 1 s c on next ch 3 of 1^st block, ch 3 catch on 2^nd block and so on along one side.

Outer edge – 1^st row: Ch 7 and s c in alternate ch-3’s. 2^nd row: Ch 7 and 1 p in each loop.

Fringe: For fringe knot 6 strands of cotton into each loop all around bed-spread.

Shell Stitch Glove no. 70
Materials: Article 102 “Silkateen” “Sansilk” 5 Balls, No. 100 White, No. 1 Cream,
No. 2 Lt. Ecru or Colors. Steel Crochet Hook No. 8.

Ch 80 for wrist join. Ch 5, skip3 sts, 1 s c in next st, repeat ti end of row ( 19 loops).
2nd row- Ch 3, 5 d c in next loop, ch 3, 1 s c in next loop, repeat all around (10 shells).

3rd row- Ch 5, s c in center of shell, ch 5 in next s c, repeat all around ( 19 loops).

4th row – Ch 5, s c in loop, repeat all around ( 19 loops)

5th row- Repeat shell row working shells between shells of preceding shell row ( 10 shells). The last 3 rows form the pattern which is followed through out the glove. Continue work for 7 more rows.

13th row – Ch 30, skip 4 loops, s c in next loop (this forms the opening for the thumb), work a row of loops, ch 5, skip 2 sts of thumb ch, s c in next st * Ch 5 skip 4 sts of ch, s c in next st, repeat from * 4 times ch 5, s c in loop (20 loops).

Work 8 more rows of pattern ending row at left of opening.

Fingers – Left hand – Fold work having the thumb opening at extreme left and work finger directly over thumb. Work 3 loops over back of glove, ch 5, s c in 4th loop on palm side of glove leaving 6 free loops, ch 5, s c in center st of ch between fingers, ch 5 in next free loop (7 loops). Work 8 rows of pattern, 1 row of 4 ch loops, 1 row of shells, with 4 d c in each shell, 2 rows of 3 ch loops, 1 row of shells with 4 d c in each shell, and 2 ch bet. Each s c, 1 row of 3 ch loops, ch 2, 1 d c in each loop, draw stitches together to close space fasten and break thread.

Middle finger – Join thread to bottom of forefinger on back of glove, work 3 loops, ch 5, s c in 2nd free loop on palm side of glove, work 1 loop, ch 5, s c in first loop between fingers, ch 5, s c in next loop between fingers, ch 5 s c in center st of ch between fingers, ch 5, s cin next free loop (7loops). Work 11 rows pattern and finish same as first finger.

Third finger – Work 3 loops on back of glove, ch 5, s c in 2nd free loop on palm of glove and work same as first finger.

Little finger- 6 rows of pattern and finish same as first finger.

Thumb – Work eleven 5 ch loops, 2 more rows of pattern. Next row * work 3 loops, s c in next loop omitting loop between, repeat from * twice (decreasing 3 loops). Work 5 more rows of pattern. Next row, decrease 1 loop inside of thumb, work 1 row of pattern. Next 6 rows of pattern work 3 ch between each s c, 4 d c in each shell and 4 chs in each loop row. 2 rows of 3 ch loops and 1 d c in each loop.

Joining thread to beginning of glove, work 1 row of loops and continue pattern for 21 rows. Next shell row work 4 ch between each s c, 2 rows of loops.

Next 9 rows of pattern work 6 chs in each loop row and 4 chs between each s c , finish glove with 1 row of s c.
Work other glove to correspond reversing the position of the thumb.
Iridescent shade No. 70 Light shading and No. 72 Dark Shading will make very attractive gloves. The varied colors will blend with either a light or dark ensemble.

These gloves can also be made of Six Cord Mercerized Crochet Cotton. We recommend sizes 20 or 30 in Art 10 “Star” Crochet Cotton or Art 30 “Silkine” Crochet Cotton or “Star” Pearl Cotton Size 8 in White, Ecru or Colors.

Steel Crochet Hook No. 8 1 Double Buckle

1st row- Ch 8, work 1st d c in 4th st from hook, 1 d c in each st.
2nd row – Ch 3, 1 d c in each d c, repeat 2nd row until work measures about 3 inches more than length required for belt. Work another band in same color and one in contrasting color. Braid the three bands together keeping work flat and tack together at intervals. Sew ends and attach buckle. This belt may also be made in “Silkateen” – “Sansilk” or “Silkine” or “Star” Crochet Cotton Size 30 using 2 strands of Cotton.

Bean Stitch Belt No. 83
Materials Required – American Thread Company “Silkine” or “Star”
Crochet Cotton Size 30. 4 Balls White
Steel Crochet Hook No. 8. 1 Bone or Metal Ring

The entire belt is worked with a double thread, Ch 275 1 s c in each st of ch, 3 s c in last st, 1 s c in each st on other side of ch. Work 2 more rows of s c working 3 s c working 3 sc in each corner of straight side and 2 s c in each of the center sts of round end. 4th row-* 1 d c in each of the 1st 4 s c, 1 bean st ( 4 d c, sl loop off hook, insert in 1st stitch and pull loop through ) in next st, repeat from * all around and work 2 more rows of sc.
Cover a 1 1/2 inch ring with a row of s c and tiwst the stitches on ring. Attach ring to straight side of belt. To fasten belt, slip round end through ring and fasten with a snapper. The belt will be equally attractive made in any of the following “Star” Brand threads. “Silkateen”- “Sansilk”, “Silkine” or “Star” Pearl Cotton Size 5,” Star” Crochet Cord, “De Luxe” or “Gem” Mercerized Crochet and Knitting Cotton. If “Silkateen”- “Sansilk” is used work with a double thread. One strand only is required for all other threads.

Coats & Clark’s O.N.T. “Speed-Cro-Sheen” Mercerized Cotton, Art. C. 44: 4 balls each of No. 49 Chartreuse Green and No. 122 Watermelon for 4 Place Mats and 6 balls of each color for 4 Chair Seat Covers.
Bondex Hot Iron Tape, Art. T. 1, 8 packs of No. 61-A Forest Green for 4 Chair Seat Covers.
Milwards Steel Crochet Hook No. 7
4 yards Moss Green Ribbon 1 inch wide.
Guage (before weaving): 19 dc = 2 inches; 4 rows = 1 inch

Background for Place Mat: Starting at lower edge with Forest Green, ch 180 to measure 20 inches.
1st row: DC in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 3 to count as 1 dc hereafter, turn. 2nd row: Skip first dc, dc in next dc and in each dc across ending with dc in top of ch-3. Ch 3, turn. Repeat 2nd row until 47 rows are completed. Fasten off.

Weaving: Always weave along odd rows only with wrong side facing. Cut 2 strands of Chartreuse and 1 strand of Watermelon each 24 inches long. 1st row: With weaving needle and 1 strand of Chartreuse doubled, skip first dc, weave under 2dc, * over 4 dc, under 2 dc. Repeat from * across, skipping last dc. 2nd row: With 1 strand of Watermelon doubled and weaving along same dc-row, skip 1 dc, weave under 1 dc, over 2 dc, under 2 dc, *over 4 dc, under 2 dc. Repeat from * across to within last 2 dc, ending under 1 dc, skip last dc. 3rd row: Weaving along same row, repeat first row.
Working along 3rd dc-row weave same as for first dc-row reversing colors. Repeat last 6 woven rows to top of Place Mat.

Block to Measurements: With right side facing sc closely along side edges. Trim loose strands to measure ½ inch. Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 12 ½ inches long. Turn under ends of ribbon and sew 1 band along both side edges to cover the cut strands.
Cut 2 pieces of ribbon 4 inches long. Pinch centers and sew at upper left-hand corner to form bow as shown in photo.

NOTE: If grosgrain ribbon is used, preshrink before using. If ribbon is not desired, turn ends of strands to wrong side and cover with Boiltex bias tape.

Background For Chair Seat Cover: Work as for Place Mat until 73 rows are completed. Weave same as for Place Mat. Block to measurements. Trim loose strands to measure 1 ¼ inches. Turn strands to wrong side of work. Cut 2 pieces of Bondex 18 inches long. Press Bondex strips over side edges on wrong side of work to cover loose strands.

With Ecru, ch 6, 6 d c in 6th ch from hook, ch 5, turn. 2nd row: 1 d c in 5th st from hook, d c over the d c across, 1 dc in each of next 2 sts of turning ch, ch 5 turn. 3rd row: Same as 2nd row. 4th Row: 1 d c in 4th ch from hook, ch 1, d c in next st, ch 1, d c in 1st d c of row below, * ch 1 skip l d c, d c in next, repeat from * to within last d c, ch 1, d c, in last d c, ch 1, d c in 1st turning ch, ch 1, d c in next st, ch 5, turn ( 11 space across ).
5th row. l d c in 5th ch from hook, d c over d c and in each sp across, ending with 1 d c in each of the next 2 sts of turning ch, ch 5, turn. ( This end is the bottom skirt ). Repeat from 2nd row once. Repeat 2nd and 3rd row once.

There should be 125 d c in 31st row. 32nd row: This starts the center seam. 1 d c in 3rd d c, omit ch-1, skip 1 dc, dc in next, *ch 1, skip 1 d c in next, repeat from * across ending with 2 open sps in 1st and 2nd sts of turning ch ( 64 open sps), ch 3, turn.
33rd row. D c in 1st d c, d c across to within last 2 d c, not counting the ch-3, and work 1 decrease st as follows: thread over hook, draw a loop through each of next 2 d c, draw thread through first 3 loops, draw thread through last 2 loops. Ch 3, turn. 34th row. Skip 1st d c (decrease st), 2 decrease sts in next 4 d c, d c across ending with 2 d c in turning ch, ch 5 turn. 35th row: 1 d c in 5th ch from hook, d c across to within last 3 d c, 1 decrease st, 1 d c in last d c, ch 3, turn. Repeat these last 4 rows, until there are 19 open rows in all, each having one less open sp than the previous row. (53 open sps in the 19th open sp row). Work next 3 solid rows as usual, and in the 20th open row, omit the last open sp in the turning ch (51 open sps). Repeat these last 4 rows, having open sps less in each open row until there are 26 open rows in all (39 open sps). Work next 2 solid rows usual, ch 1 instead of 3 for turning ch in last row. For waistline, sl st to 7th d c, 1 s c in next, d c across, ending in usual way, ch 3, turn. Next open row should have open sps, ch 3, turn.

Work as usual to within last 2 d c, not counting turning ch, and work 2 d c in each these last 2 d c, 1 d c in turning ch, ch 3, turn. 3rd solid row. 1 d c in 1st d c, 2 d c in next d c, d c over d c ending as usual, ch 3, turn. In the 2nd open row above waistline there should 28 open sps. Repeat these last 4 rows twice. The 6th open row will have 29 open sps without making any increase. On the 7th open row, increase same as in 5^th row (30 open sps), and the 8^th will have 30 without any increase. Left Front Panel: Follow directions of Right Front Panel through the 11^th row, the end of which is the side seam. 12^th row: 1 d c in 1^st d c, ch 1, 1 d c in next, * ch 1 ckip 1 d c, d c in next 2 sts of turning ch (28 open aps across), ch 5, turn. This is bottom of skirt. Repeat from 9^th row twice (44 open sps). 21^st row: Same as 9^th row, ,aking ch 3 instead of 5 for turning ch at end of row. 22^nd row: 1 d c in 1^st d c, d c across ending in usual way. Repeat from 19^th row twice. 31^st row: Same as 27^th row (125 d c across). Next row starts center seam.

32^nd row: D c in 1^st d c, ch 1, d c in next open sps across, omitting the ch 1 between sps in last 2 sps and leaving turning ch unworked, (64 open sps), ch 3, turn. 33^rd row: 1 decrease st (taking 2^nd and 3^rd d c), d c across ending with 3 d c in last open sp as usual, ch 3, turn. 34^th row. 1 d c in 1^st d c, d c across ending with 2 decrease sts in last 4 d c, ch 3, turn. 35^th row: 1 decrease st (taking 2^nd and 3^rd d c), d c across, ending in usual way, ch 5, turn. From now on, work to correspond with the Right Front Panel. The center seam is always worked the same. If any decrease is to be made, it is done at the side seam, such as decreasing a sp by skipping the 1^st d c at beginning of row.

Left Back Panel: Follow directions of Right Front Panel, working 4 more rows starting center seam (140d c in last solid d c row, counting turning ch as as a d c). The 26^th open row should have 47 open sps. Work 2 solid rows of d c as usual, ending at side seam. Then work short rows same as top of front panel, having four short open rows instead of 3, and ending with the 2^nd solid row with 2 decrease sts, 1 d c, and break off.

Right Back Panel: Follow directions of Right Left Panel, working 4 more rows before starting center seam, as in Left Back Panel. Join the two front panels at center seam. Them join back and front at side seams, taking care to have all panels with right side outside. Finish bottom skirt with 6 rows of s c, keeping work flat. Finish waistline and front panel with 2 rows of s c.

Blouse: Starting at neck edge, ch 142, with Ecru. 1^st row: 1 d c in 6^th ch from hook * ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in next, repeat from * across (68 open sps), ch 5, turn.

2nd row. 1 d c in 3rd d c of previous row (this makes a decrease), 10 open sps, ch 1, d c in same d c to form an increase, 1 increase in each of next 3 d c, 38 open sps, 1 increase in each of next 4 d c, 10 open sps, omit the ch 1, d c in 1st st of turning ch, ch 5, turn. 3rd row: D c in 3rd d c, 11 open sps, 1 increase in each of next 4 d c (1st increase comes on top of 1st d c of 2nd increase of row below), 42 open sps, 4 increases, 11 open sps, d c in 1st st of turning ch. 4th row: Drop Ecru, attach Green on top of 1st d c, ch 9, 1 s cin 3rd d c, * across, ch 1, turn. 5th row: SI st in each ch of 1st loop of ch-9, * skip the s c, sl st in each of next loop, repeat from * across. 6th row: Fasten off Green, and with Ecru sl st to center of 1st loop, *ch 3, 1 s c in center of next loop, repeat from * to last loop, ch 5, turn. 7th row: *D c in 1st s c of previous row, ch 1, d c in 2nd ch of ch-3, ch 1, repeat from * until there are 12 open sps, 4 increases, 45 open sps 4 increases, 12 open sps, ch 5, turn. 8th row: Decrease 1 open sp at beginning and end and make usual 4 increases at shoulders. The pattern is composed of 4 Ecru rows and 2 Green rows.
Continue to work in pattern, increasing 1 open sp at beginning and end of each of the d c rows, instead of decreasing, and making usual shoulder increases, and there are 7 Green stipes. Then work evenly on Ecru stripes until there are 10 Green stripes in all. On the next row, which will be the Ecru s c-row, work over 23 loops, omit ch 3, skip 37 loops to be worked later for sleeve, work over 46 loops for back, omit ch 3, skip next 37 loops, work remaining 23 loops. In case there are more loops, add to the back section. If fewer loops, take from front section.
Work next 5 rows evenly at ends and underarm sections. On next s c-row work as usual, but omit the ch 3 between loops for the t loops under arms. On next 3 d c-rows, work to within 4 open sps from end. The loop row is worked to within 2 open sps from end. Next s c row is even at ends with usual underarm decreases. The 3 d c-rows are worked to within 2 open sps from end, and last loop row is worked to within 2 open sps. Finish around waist with Ecru, working in s c with ch-2 between, so that front sections will be slightly gathered to fit top of skirt. With Ecru work 1 row of s c up front edges, and d c over d c, omitting the ch-1, around the neck edge.

Sleeves. Attach Ecru at underarm on right side of work in 1st loop where front is joined to back, and work across in pattern. Continue working in pattern, decreasing 1 open sp at both ends in the 3 d c-rows, and making 3 increase instead of 4 in the center, until there are 7 Green stripes. Then finish with 4 Ecru rows worked evenly, and 1 row of d c over last row. Fasten off. Work other sleeve to correspond.
Buttons: With Green, ch 9, work 8 s c for 15 rows, sl st the 2 short ends together, leaving sewing length and fasten off thread. Make 8 buttons.

Loops: Ch 23, sl st over ch and join ends. Make 8 loops. Sew buttons and loops to front panel as illustrated, making sure to have the rows of each in the same direction.
Sew blouse to skirt, with front panel overlapping the blouse to fit. From wrong side, make a beading for the elastic around waist, leaving front panel free. Attach Ecru to front panel, 1 inch above waistline, ch 7, s c to blouse 1 inch from where thread was attached, and continue around to the other side of front panel.

Belt: With Green, ch 16, turn. 1st row: S c in 2nd ch from hook, s c in each st of ch, ch 1, turn. 2nd row: S c in s c across, ch 1, turn. Repeat 2nd row until belt measures 28 inches ( or length desired ). With 2 strands of Green, ch 22, and work in s c for 20 rows. Fold piece with lines running across the short way. Then sl st around it. Make another square, sew squares to belt as illustrated, and fasten belt with snap fasteners.

Materials: J.P. Coats Knit-Cro-Sheen, Ecru, 5 balls, for center mat and 4 place mats. Milward’s steel crochet hook No. 6.

Place mats: (4) Ch 127, turn. 1st row: D c in 11th ch from hook, * ch 3, skip 3 sts of ch, d c in next st, repeat from * across (30sps), ch 7, turn.

2nd to 39th rows incl: Sp over sp, ch 7, turn.

Ending: 1^st row: Starting at center of corner sp, make a group of 4 wheat sts as follows: Ch 5, wrap thread 8 times over hook ( ¾ inch above head of hook) avoiding wrapping one thread over avoiding wrapping one thread over another on hook. With forefinger of right hand, lower all these wrapped threads together near head of hook, insert it in st from which ch-5 started, thread over, draw loop out on hook (10 loops on hook), thread over and draw thread through all loops at once, make ch 1, thus fastening st. Wrap over 8 times and continue making 3 more wheat sts the same way, making them all in the same st as the first wheat st. Ch 9, * skip 2 d c, make a group of 4 wheat sts in next d c, ch 7, repeat from * around, making ch-9 instead of ch-7 before and after each corner group. Fasten last ch-9 with sl st to group, then sl st to center (between 2^nd and 3^rd wheat sts) of same group.

2^nd row: CH 5, make group of wheat sts in center of same group, ch 6, s c under ch-9, ch 6, *make a group in center of next wheat-st group, ch 4, s c under ch-7, ch 4, repeat from * around, making ch-6 instead of ch-4 before and after each corner group. Join as before. 3^rd row: Like 2^nd row, making ch 7 between groups and omitting s c. Making ch 11 before and after each corner group. Join as before.

4^th row: Ch 5, make group of wheat sts in center of same group, * ch 6, remove hook, insert hook in top of 1^st wheat st of group just made and draw through, over the ch-6 make 4 s c, a ch-5 picot, 4 s c. Then ch 8, s c under ch-11 of previous row, ch 8, make a group in center of next group, repeat from * making ch 4, s c under ch-7, ch 4 between groups of wheat sts, excepting on each side of corner group, make ch 8, s c under ch-11, ch 8. Join as before.

Center mat: Work same as place mats, but make 81 rows. Edging same as for place mats.
