Materials: J.P Coats, Knit- Cro-Sheen, Ecru , 5 balls for center mat and 4 place mats. Milward’s steel crochet hook no. 5.
Medallions: Ch 13, turn. 1st row: D c in 7th ch from hook. * Ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in next, repeat from * 2 more times. Ch 4, turn. 2nd row: D c in d c of row below, * ch 1, d c in next d c, and repeat from * 2 more times, making last d c in turning ch. Ch 4, turn. 3rd and 4th rows: Same as 2nd. From here on, work around. 1st rnd: 2 s c under sp around, making an extra s c at each corner. 2nd round: S c in each s c around, making 2 s c in each corner s c. 3rd rnd: S c in each s c, and at corners make 2 s c in each 2 sts.
4th rnd: S c to center of 1st side, then ch 10, join with sl st to base of ch to form ring. Without turning work over, making into ring 3 s c, * ch 3 (for a picot), 3 s c, repeat from * 2 more times. Continue making s c’s around, making a ring at the center of each side. At corners work 2 s c in each of 2 sts, as before. 5th rnd: * Ch 6, s c into 1st of next ring, ch 9, s c in 3rd p of same ring, ch 6, s c in corner s c. Repeat from * around, joining last ch-6 with a sl st base to 1st ch 6.
6th rnd: * 4 s c over loop, ch 3, 4 s c over same loop, 4 s over next loop, ch 3, 4 s c, ch 3 4 s c, ch 3, 4 s c and in next loop 4 s c, ch 3, 4 s c. Repeat from * around. 7th rnd: Sl st over 4 s c to 1st p. S c in p, * ch 4, s c in next p, and repeat from * around. Fasten off. For set, make 48 medallions.
Place mats: (4) Sew 4 medallions in a strip. Attach thread at one corner, and working along the side of the strip, ch 5, skip 1 st, d c in next, * ch 1, skip 1 st, d c in next. Repeat from * across. CH 5, turn. 2nd row: * D c in next d c, ch 1, repeat from * acroh 5, turn. Repeat 2nd row 27 more times. Sew a strip of medallions across end and finish around entire piece with 4 s c, ch 3 picot, worked in loops of medallions and in sps at sides.
Center mat: Worj same as place mats, using 2 strips of medallions at ends. Make 60 rows of sps for center section. Finish around entire piece as before.
